Canadian Public Service Announcements have come a long way.

Take a look at something you’d see today:

Compare to what you would have seen in the past:

I think these videos speak for themselves. :P

I finally moved into my new house. So a couple of days ago, I decided to pay a visit to Ikea. I’m always super excited to go to Ikea, but always leave the store being angered and frustrated. Why? Two reasons.

1. IKEA is a maze; there is no escape.

I thought I might have been the only person to blog about this, but someone has beat me to it. To summarize, I stole this image from their blog entry.

Essentially, this is the floor plan of Ikea. The dotted lines represent shortcuts you can take to get from one place to another. Seems easy to figure out, right? But notice how you have to walk a bit in order to get to the next shortcut? And on top of that, these shortcuts are hidden. Above you there will be a sign that points you in the direction of a shortcut, but you look in that direction to see nothing there. It’s not until you walk a bit further that you actually see it.

All in all, you are forced to view every single item in Ikea if you want to get out of the store. And when you finally get out of the showroom, you’re probably tired. But do not fear, for there is a marketplace on the floor below. Grab something to eat, maybe? It’s smart, but evil.

2. The bin numbers are rarely correct.

So you find something you like. Great! You write down the aisle and bin number of the item. You finally escape the maze-like showroom and you go to the warehouse. You look for the aisle of where you item is located. You find it, you walk down that aisle and find the bin number. You arrive at your bin number and your $20 night table has suddenly transformed into a $230 bookcase.

Well you know what, screw you Ikea. I’m leaving without buying any furniture. But instead, I’m going to buy food from the marketplace because oddly enough, this furniture store has some pretty good snacks. They have chocolate and ginger snaps that I recommend you to try… and although I haven’t tried it, their frozen yogurt doesn’t look too bad either. =\

And despite all that is wrong with the store, they do have good furniture at relatively decent prices. Also, if you need something to match with your current, existing furniture, you’ll be able to find it.

So if you ever plan to go to Ikea, with the intent of getting in and out, think again. When you plan your next trip to Ikea, expect an adventure.
